The Canigou Race - Vernet les Bains (Pyrénées Orientales)

Sunday August 1st 2010

Stepped in history, this mountain race in the Pyrénées Orientales is held on the first Sunday of August. The event is open to both walkers and runners and follows a circular route over a distance of 34km, with 2,100 metres (nearly 7,000 feet) of ascent.

Competitors set off from Vernet-les-Bains, pass close to the Mariailles refuge, head for the summit of the mountain, then descend to Vernet down the north slope of Canigou, past the Cortalets chalet. Not for the faint hearted!

Poble Espanyol festival - Barcelona

For 2010 the festival is aimed at a younger audience, with more contemporary performances that combine traditional catalan music with emerging pop acts.

Argelès-sur-Mer - Les Déferlantes 2010

Iggy Pop, Deep Purple, Suzanne Vega and Patti Smith are among the many acts performing during Les Déferlantes d'Argelès-sur-Mer music festival this weekend.

Held in a natural amphitheatre at Chateau Valmy (approx 20km from Perpignan - map here) overlooking Argelès-sur-Mer and the Mediterranean, Les Déferlantes has become one of the premier events of the Pyrenees Orientales summer season.

Céret de Toros - Feria in the Pyrenees Orientales

Saturday 10th - Sunday 11th July 2010 : Feria Céret de Toros - two days of bull!

This yearly bullfighting festival is a huge event in Céret and indeed in the whole of the Pyrénées-Orientales, but be warned; It is not for everyone!

Perpignan - Les Estivales 2010

3rd - 30th July 2010

The month long summer festival "Les Estivales" got underway in Perpignan this weekend. This year more than 600 artistes will put on 70 performances of music, dance, theatre, circus and cinema during July.
